So Ive been working on an article which involves bullying, but I havent had the chance to finish it yet to publish. We should see it next week. More great stuff happening.

What are you doing with regard to Anti-Bullying

Movement and energy on the ‘Anti-Bullying’ front

November 9th, 2011

Today I had lunch with a friend, colleague and fellow coach.

We had a fantastic conversation and have come to a starting place around this topic.  The ideas are just beginning to form and I don’t want to share them until we have a clearer and fuller understanding, but know this….there will be actions coming in the near future.

I’ll keep ya posted as we go.

What action(s) are you taking?

Bullying and Lady Gaga

November 3rd, 2011

A buddy of mine posted on my facebook today a link to an article in the huffington post.

Both the MacArthur Foundation and Harvard University give out grants for anti-bullying effort and they are both joining forces with Lady Gaga who is starting her foundation “Born This Way”.  Lady Gaga will be directing this foundation along with her mother Cynthia Germanotta.

“Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment,” Gaga said in a statement.

While I don’t follow Lady Gaga or her art I do have to say that these words speak volumes to me.  Bravery and Kindness and Community.  I am now wondering how can I support a vision like that, a vision like the one on this website.

I am greatfull for the support of my friends and colleagues around this issue.  I feed my passion from your support and continue to look for more ways to take action.

Together we can make a difference in this world.

RMR – Bullying and Teen Suicide

November 2nd, 2011

Further notes on my actions.

I’ve been reading the large amounts of information on http://bullying.org and finding so much of it filled with hope.  I have sent in a few comments of my own in hopes that it is of support.

What actions are the rest of you taking in this area?

RMR: Rick’s Rant – Teen Suicide – continued

October 29th, 2011

This is the continuing story of my journey to take action against bullying.  See my previous posts to get the background on this journey.

I emailed and got a lengthy response from Bill Belsey of http://bullying.org/

They have done so much work in this area.  They have won multiple awards and created a space where those being bullied can go and connect with others to help work through it.  I wish we had this when I was in school.

I’m doing my research and learning so that I can come to this action with an understanding.   Please check out this website for information about bullying.    As Bill puts it,  bullying is a community issue.  It’s not just school kids or college.  It adults, its the work place, its all through out our community.

I’m going to continue to gathering information for a little while (few days) and continue having conversations with folks.

I’ve taken my first action.  On this website you can read what people share and if you have a positive comment you may make it.  Your comment will be moderated by someone from the site and if it’s deemed positive then it will be added as a posted comment on the site.  I’m going to be reading through these for the next couple of days and looking to see what I am called to share with others on.

Stay tuned for more of the journey.

RMR: Rick’s Rant – Teen Suicide – Next steps

October 27th, 2011

From a previous blog entry I am posting to let you know what my first actions have been.

1)  wrote the blog article

2) Contacted another coach who I thought would also have an interest in this area to have a discussion to see if they had any thoughts/ideas/suggestions for how I might be take positive resulting actions.

3) Spoke to a co-worker who put me in touch with a teacher who is passionate about addressing ‘Bullying’ named Bill Belsey (see http://bullying.org)

4) on this above website began researching and learning more about what is going on already to see how I might contribute.

Watch this blog for more updates on actions taken with regard to the issues of Bullying and Teen Suicide

RMR: Rick’s Rant – Teen Suicide – YouTube

October 26th, 2011

Many of us will watch this and say things like “Right On”, “Its about time somebody said somthing”, or “Thank you Rick Mercer”.

The problem is how many of us will ‘Do’ something about this situation.

I am reminded of an entry in the blog “Stuff White People Like”

An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe that all of the world’s problems can be solved through “awareness.”  Meaning the process of making other people aware of problems, and then magically someone else like the government will fix it. (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/01/23/18-awareness/)

How many Canadians are content to think, ‘Well Rick Mercer said somthing on TV so that should fix it’.  To quote George R. R. Martin “Words are wind.”  However it is actions that Matter.

So while I agree it’s an important message,  what actions can we and will we take to help prevent Teen suicides in the future?

What can I do about this?  I don’t know how I’m going to do this yet, but I commit to finding a way that I can have an affect on our society regarding this topic.  I will find an action and I will take it.

So, “Thank you Rick.  I’ll let you know what action’s I am taking as I come to them.”

Stay tuned for updates.
